Kiyoshi Kohatsu's work investigates the nuances of life through the use of cartoons and animation emphasizing the symbiotic nature of animation in today's digital media. Kohatsu explores cartoon characters as motifs to describe the idea of imaginary self. Sometimes using pencil and paper, digital ink and paint on canvas, non-linear narratives and slow-motion images, he creates meditative environments that suggest the expansion of animation as a form of modern art.
Character Design and Sketches
Besides supervising the modeling of these CG characters, I also designed and art directed the new costumes they wear. Usually the process will start with pencil+paper, and artistic directions made using Photoshop or Corel Painter.
These are some avatars I designed for Pikkle inc. Japan. It's was used on MIXI's mobile game: "Rock Star" (Mixi is a popular social network in Japan)
